School-Age Child Care in Texas Public Schools

Principal Investigator:
Laura Lein, Ph.D.

Duration: 94 - 96
A statewide After-School Child Care Survey was conducted by the Center for Social Work Research in conjunction with Texas Department of Human Services (TDHS) and Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) in order to collect information on existing after-school programs, plans to start school sponsored after-school care, and obstacles to such programs. The long-term goal of this project was to help define steps necessary to enhance and support the expansion of developmentally appropriate school-age child care statewide, with a focus on increased involvement of public education in the process. The first phase of this project entailed intensive interviews with experts and professionals in the area of child development and care. An initial series of interviews with experts provided information necessary to design a survey that was mailed to superintendents in all school districts in Texas. Telephone interviews were conducted to gather information from superintendents who did not complete the written survey. At the end of the first year of this study, research staff completed a report on the results of the superintendent survey. The second phase of the project involved collecting data from school sponsored child care programs. Focus groups and individual interviews were conducted with stakeholders in school-age child care. The final report was released in Fall 1997.
