Removing Barriers to Inter-group Relations Among Diverse Youth in Middle School

Principal Investigator:
Laura Lein, Ph.D.
Cindy Carlson, UT Department of Educational Psychology

Duration: 96 - 98
The work on this project was a multi-disciplinary, multi-method, school-based field study of ethnically diverse students aged 10 to 14. This project was designed to study the impact of the transition from elementary to middle schools, placing an emphasis on the patterns of inter-group peer relationships that develop as students move from more homogenous neighborhood schools to more ethnically diverse middle schools beyond the neighborhoods. This recently completed study included ethnographic observation of students in school settings, surveys of students, and focus group interviews with students. A report has been submitted to the Carnegie Corporation and the research team is developing a series of publications.
